Angela Norton
Professional Counselor Associate, QMHP
I am a Professional Counselor Associate working toward full licensure. I am passionate about learning, exploring new ideas, and having new experiences. Outside of counseling, I enjoy dancing Cuban Salsa (Salsa Rueda) and other Latin dances, reading fiction across a variety of genres, playing games—including board, card, and strategy games—and being creative through painting, drawing, knitting, and pretty much anything else that allows creative expression. My interest in somatic and nervous system–based counseling stems from personal experiences that inspired me to explore the connection between the nervous system, behavior, and emotional well-being. This journey deepened my understanding of the ways in which our bodies and nervous systems can shape how we experience and respond to the world. It ultimately led me to focus on trauma-informed counseling with individual adults. I bring both professional experience and personal curiosity to my work, and I believe that genuine connection, compassion, and a willingness to keep learning are essential parts of the counseling process.
Angela's Approach
I believe counseling is a collaborative process. Together, we will explore the challenges you face to develop an approach that honors your unique experiences, strengths, and goals. My hope is to help you develop and/or increase skills and confidence to navigate life’s difficulties with greater self-compassion. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where you feel heard, valued, and empowered to move toward lasting change.
My primary approach is somatic drawing from Somatic Experiencing® and Polyvagal Theory. Sometimes, we cannot simply think our way through challenges and pain because trauma and stress live in the body and nervous system. By including the body and the nervous system, we can begin to restore a felt-sense of safety, release patterns of stress, and support the body’s natural capacity for healing and wholeness. I invite clients to reconnect with the wisdom of their bodies and to develop greater trust in their own internal experiences.
Recognizing each person is unique, I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches based on each client’s needs and goals. These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). Additionally, I am learning about Internal Family Systems (IFS) and I am working towards completing Clinical Trauma Professional Training (CCPT I and II).
I welcome and honor each client’s spiritual and/or religious beliefs and practices. When desired by the client, I am happy to incorporate spirituality or faith into our work in a way that feels meaningful, respectful, and supportive.
